Physical Exam Q & A

What is a Physical Exam?

A physical exam is a whole body examination that most patients have around once a year. People who have chronic conditions that require ongoing care may need more regular physical exams to monitor the state of their health. Most healthy people should have a physical, even if they don't have any current medical issues, to make sure that developing health problems are identified and treated early. Some people have to get a physical exam before they can work for certain employers, play team sports, travel internationally, obtain an insurance policy, or for other reasons.

What is Included in a Physical Exam?

The physical exam monitors the patient's overall wellness. This includes checking the ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, skin, reflexes, and much more. The doctor will ask patients a series of questions about their health and recent illnesses to help them better address any areas of concern. A physical exam may indicate that specific tests are needed. If so, those tests may be performed at the same time as the physical exam. This may include blood tests, screening for pre-diabetes and diabetes, thyroid tests, strep throat tests, urinalysis, and many other types of testing. If the patient is due for vaccinations, those can also be done during the physical exam.

Is Any Special Preparation Needed Before a Physical Exam?

In most cases, no special preparation is required before a physical exam. Patients should dress comfortably in loose-fitting clothing. The doctor will need a list of medicine, including even over the counter and supplements, that the patient is taking. If the patient has undergone testing or treatment at another facility or from another caregiver recently, those medical records should be sent to the doctor performing the physical exam ahead of time. If any planned blood tests or other tests require fasting, the staff will let the patient know ahead of time.
