Stress Testing Q & A

What is Stress Testing?

Stress testing is a type of exercise test that is done on a treadmill in most cases. During stress testing, an electrocardiogram (EKG) machine will measure the patient's heart rate to see how the heart is working when it's required to work at its peak capacity.

How Can Patients Prepare For Stress Testing?

Since the patient will be in motion and may even perspire lightly during a stress test, they should wear breathable and lightweight clothing. Shoes should be sturdy and have a good grip, with tennis shoes being the best option for most people. The doctor may recommend fasting before the stress test. Patients may be asked to avoid caffeine and other stimulants before the stress test, as this can elevate the heart rate and skew the results of the test. Patients should make sure that they get adequate sleep so they can perform at their best during the stress testing.

What Medications Must be Stopped Before Stress Testing?

The doctor will provide patients with a list of medicines that they must stop taking before their stress testing. In most cases, the medicine must be stopped for a minimum of 2 days before the test, as the presence of certain medications can skew the test results. The medications that should be stopped usually include inhaled asthma medications and other medications that impact the heart rate in some way.

How Long Will Stress Testing Take?

This can depend on the situation, but for most patients, the exercise itself will take only 10 to 15 minutes. Patients will need to plan for at least a couple of hours in the office, as they will need to have heart images made both before and after the exercise part of the test. Dr. Waldman's staff will schedule the appointment to make it as convenient and easy as possible.
